Athletic Club 2-1 Barcelona: Messi’s goal gives hope to the Blaugrana

FC Barcelona traveled to Bilbao for the 1/8 final of the Copa del Rey game against Athletic Club Bilbao but will not go back home satisfied as they lost to a very tough opponent in the competition. Luis Enrique had deployed his best players for an opponent like this but will return home with a 2-1 loss after conceding two goals in the first 27 minutes of the game while Messi was only able to pull one back with a free kick. The first goal for ‘The Lions’ came when Iniesta wanted to give a through ball to Suarez but it was intercepted by Iturraspe and immediately passed to Aduriz. He immediately initiated a counter attack when he passed to Gracia who went with the ball to the far right and crossed to the free Aduriz who headed the ball into the net.

It was as if the Blaugrana’s defenders were still cry over the first goal when the second came three minutes after the first goal. Athletic won the ball after a throwing. With a back heel from Adriz to Inaki and a shot of the ball into the net made ‘The Lions’ two goals ahead of Barca in the first half.

The only goal from Barcelona came as a result of free kick taken by Lione Messi. Although, Athletic goalkeeper protested after the referee had counted it as a goal but the official had made his decision. It’s clearly a goal.

The return leg will be on Wednesday 11, that’s where the Catalan club are looking to turn things around as they hope to qualify into the next stage of the competition.
