The former FC Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez have opened up on the choice to give Cristiano Ronaldo the Ballon d’Or award. However, the midfielder have condemned the the criteria for choosing the Ballon d’Or winner which is the best player and not the player with the most trophies.
While speaking to TV3, the former Barcelona captain who now plays in Qatar said; “they were only looking out for the major trophies won by the players. But there are other edition of the award in past years that they didn’t use this method to award the best player in the world.”
“Cristiano Ronaldo won the Ballon d’Or not because he’s the best player but because of major trophies won by his teammates. Messi is still the best player of the year 2016 despite some else must have won the trophy,” said Xavi Hernandez.
When Xavi was asked about Messi’s future, he replied: “I don not know if he’ll renew his contract with his current club because we only talked about our families when we saw after their friendly game against Al Ahli. The only think I know is that he’s happy at Barcelona and I hope he stays there.”
